Have Your Employees Completed the Sexual Harassment Prevention Training? – Deadline is January 1, 2021

Have Your Employees Completed the Sexual Harassment Prevention Training? – Deadline is January 1, 2021

California law now requires all employers with 5 or more employees to provide a 1-hour sexual harassment and abusive conduct prevention training to nonsupervisory employees and 2 hours of training to supervisors and managers.  All employees, including temporary and seasonal employees, must complete these training courses by January 1, 2021 and do so every 2 years.

In the past, employers had to provide these training programs at their own expense, costing companies hundreds of dollars; but, luckily California SB 1343 requires The Department of Fair Employment and Housing (“DFEH”) to provide these courses for “FREE.”  Once an employee completes the on-line training, the DFEH issues a certificate of completion to be given to the employer.  Employers must retain a record of completion for each employee for two years.

The free training is accessible on both a computer and mobile device, but the employer must pay the employee the time spent in training.

SB 1343 also requires the DFEH to provide posters and fact sheets to employers regarding sexual harassment.  For questions you can contact DFEH at www.dfeh.ca.gov or read SB 1343 at www.leginfo.legislature.ca.gov.
